Helping Families Manage Wandering Behaviors in the Home

According to the Alzheimer's Association (2014), an estimated 13.9% of persons over the age of 71 have some form of dementia. Dementia is the term used to describe a variety of conditions that cause a decline in memory or other cognitive skills, including Alzheimer's disease. Persons with dementia exhibit many behaviors, including wandering, that even trained caregivers find challenging to manage. In some individuals, wandering is safe and healthy, while in others, it has the potential to be harmful and even life threatening. As a home care worker, you have a responsibility to educate those providing care to persons with dementia about wandering behaviors to help them better manage this behavior and decrease the need for residential care. In this course, you will learn how to identify clients at risk for wandering and how caregivers can manage potential wandering hazards and wandering behaviors. *Additionally, this course is offered in Spanish
