Neuropathic Ulcers and Recommended Wound Care

Foot ulcers are a significant complication of diabetes mellitus. Approximately 15 to 20 percent of the estimated 21 million persons diagnosed with diabetes mellitus in the U.S. will be hospitalized with a foot complication at some time during the course of their disease. People with diabetes make up approximately 60% of the non-traumatic amputations in adults over age 20, and 80% of those were preceded by foot ulceration. Approximately 65,700 lower extremity amputations were performed in 1 year on people with diabetes. The diabetic foot and its sequelae account for billions of dollars in direct medical expenditures. Through proper evaluation and treatment interventions we attempt to significantly reduce these complications and expenditures.
