Restorative Nursing: Bowel and Bladder for Nursing Assistants

Urinary and bowel incontinence is a serious problem that affects the physical and mental health of many older adults. It is a treatable symptom of an underlying condition. The appropriate management of incontinence can have results ranging from a reduction in incontinent episodes to complete continence. Unfortunately, many residents are not adequately assessed and treated for urinary and bowel incontinence which leads to a decrease in a resident’s quality of life.
To improve residents’ quality of life and well-being, it is important for you to understand your role in restorative nursing care in tracking of bowel and bladder incontinence. In this course, you will learn about factors that affect the bowel and bladder with aging, the assessment process to determine appropriate bowel and bladder programs and the benefits of an effective program. Finally, you will learn how you follow a restorative bowel and bladder program to manage or eliminate incontinence.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are an LPN taking this course, it is important to remember that you are NOT allowed to assess but rather can collect data. In this course, the use of any form of the term assess also refers to the collection of data.
