Restorative Nursing: Dining and Feeding for the Nurse

While the most basic purpose of eating is to provide our bodies with essential nutrients, eating also serves as a means of socialization and, for many people, is a source of joy and pleasure. Because the ability to eat independently is one of the most basic of skills that we learn at an early age, losing this ability can lead to feeling a loss of control, independence, and self-worth. It can also negatively affect residents’ nutritional status. Therefore, it is important to attempt to restore residents’ ability to feed themselves independently, at least to some degree, with restorative nursing programs. In this course, you will learn about the factors that affect nutritional intake and about the elements of restorative dining and restorative eating programs.
